PET brain scans reveal dramatic differences between normal brains and those from individuals with addictions. The bottom row in this figure shows images from normal brains. The upper row shows images from individuals who abuse meth or alcohol, and they show reduced levels (indicated by dimmer colors) of dopamine receptors (Volkow, 2003).

This same pattern of change is observed in individuals who have abused methamphetamine (Figure 7).
